Union Budget 2025: A Strategic Focus on Artificial Intelligence

In her eighth Budget presentation, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman shared plans that reflect the Indian government’s determination to integrate AI across critical sectors. The most notable announcements include a ₹2,000 crore allocation for the IndiaAI Mission and ₹500 crore for establishing a new Centre of Excellence in AI for education.

IndiaAI Mission 2025: AI Development and Charter for Education Advancement.

Allocating ₹2,000 for Artificial Intelligence in India in-house has been a brave move in this raging environment of technology. In the year 2024, under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the IndiaAI Mission 2025 aims to embed AI within agriculture, healthcare, and governance. The mission facilitates access to subsidized Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) for startups and researchers to foster the development of indigenous AI models.

The FY26 budget allocates ₹2,000 crores to the IndiaAI Mission, marking a 1,056% increase from the revised ₹173 crore in the 2024-25 budget. This surge in funding signifies India’s intent to fast-track AI innovations and reduce reliance on foreign technologies. 

IndiaAI Mission 2025 and GPU Allocation for Foundational Model Development.

The government under their Union Budget for Artificial Intelligence has shortlisted 10 companies to supply nearly 19,000 GPUs, exceeding the original target of 10,000 GPUs under the IndiaAI Mission. This move supports the creation of foundational AI models that can compete globally, creating efforts similar to China’s DeepSeek and OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

IITs and Medical Colleges plan to expand education infrastructure:

1. IIT Expansion: Student capacity has doubled from 65,000 to 1.35 lakh in the last decade, with plans to accommodate 6,500 more students in newly established IITs.

2. Medical Education Growth: The government aims to create an additional 10,000 medical seats in the upcoming year, with a long-term goal of 75,000 new seats over five years.

National Centres for upskilling and achieving technical excellence:
